Philippe raised his gaze from the computer screen, where words seemed to be swimming in front of his tired eyes, and looked out to the uninterrupted view of the turquoise ocean, dotted with small boats. Since arriving at his luxury hotel, positioned right at the tip of the Varadero peninsula, he had spent almost every waking moment tapping away at the computer keys like a man possessed, breaking from his writing only long enough to walk to the restaurant and back at meal times. He didn’t like Varadero much, apart from the amazing view, it was far too commercial for his taste and lacking any authentic Cuban character, but it was serving his purpose well. Since arriving, three days previously, he had written twenty thousand words of his new novel. Having suffered such a writer’s block on his second book, he couldn’t quite believe how easily it was all flowing. It helped having no distractions. He had emailed Jo the moment he arrived in Varadero:
